Sparky Anderson

Legendary Manager of the Detroit Tigers

Once referred to as "the animated ambassador of baseball, spreading the good word of the game wherever he goes," Sparky Anderson retired as manager of the Detroit Tigers in 1995, after enjoying a distinguished 16-year career with the team.

The former senior American League manager's accomplishments are numerous. He left the Tigers as the third winningest manager in team history with 2,194 victories. (Connie Mack holds the top record with 3,371 wins, and John McGraw is second with 2,763). Sparky Anderson is one of only three managers to have managed more than 4,000 games. He's in great company­the other managers who have achieved this distinction are Connie Mack, John McGraw and Bucky Harris.

Sparky Anderson remains the only manager to lead teams to 100-win seasons (he led Cincinnati in 1970, 1975 and 1976 and Detroit in 1984). He is the only manager in history to lead teams to World Championships in both leagues (Cincinnati in 1975 and 1976, and Detroit in 1984).

He was named National League Manager of the Year in 1972 and 1975, and was honored as American League Manager of the Year in 1984 and 1987.

Sparky Anderson left the Tigers as the clubs' all-time leader in wins (1,331) and is the only manager in history to lead two franchises in victories (Detroit: 1,331, and Cincinnati: 863). Widely regarded as one of the sports world's most colorful figures, Sparky Anderson is certain to earn a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
