Kim Campbell

Canada's First Woman Prime Minister

Kim Campbell served as Canada's nineteenth and first female Prime Minister. She previously held cabinet portfolios as Minister of State for Indian Affairs and northern Development, Minister of Justice, Attorney General and Minister of National Defense and Veterans' Affairs. She was the first woman to hold the Justice and Defense portfolios. Internationally, she participated in major meetings including those of the Commonwealth, NATO, G-7 and the United Nations.

Ms. Campbell speaks around the world on issues relating to women, international relations in the post-Cold War world, democratization and Canada/U.S. relations. Recent clients include the California Chamber of Commerce, local Chambers throughout the Southwest, and gatherings of venture capitalists, meeting planners, and high tech and medical company leaders. She has delivered academic addresses at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Berkeley, University of Chicago, Thunderbird School of Management and others.

In the international arena, Ms. Campbell is often invited to bring her skills as a consensus builder and communicator to bear. Most recently, she has been called upon to participate in a forum on emerging democracies in Yemen, a conference on governance in Belfast, and an upcoming meeting of the African Development Bank; incorporating gender into poverty reduction strategies.

Ms. Campbell is currently Consul General of Canada in Los Angeles where she brings a Canadian perspective on a number of world issues. She is also involved in promoting trade development, especially in the areas of multi-media, technology and biotechnology.
