Tom's rise to stardom in the business world began with the phenomenal success of his 1982 book In Search of Excellence. Tom received his B.C.E. and M.C.E. from Cornell University and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford. He served his country in the United States Navy in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970, was a senior White House drug-abuse advisor in 1973-1974 and worked at McKinsey & Co. from 1974 to 1981, becoming a partner in 1977.
