Frank W. Abagnale

Authority on Fraud

Frank W. Abagnale is one of the world's most respected authorities on the subject of forgery, embezzlement and secured documents. For over twenty-five years he has lectured to and consulted with thousands of financial institutions, corporations and government agencies around the world. He also lectures extensively at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and for the FBI's field offices. Over 14,000 financial institutions, corporations, and law enforcement agencies utilize his fraud prevention techniques.

Mr. Abagnale was a multi-millionaire before reaching the age of 21. He had accumulated his wealth the "other old-fashion way," he stole it. At one point, authorities considered him one of the world's most wanted men. However, Abagnale didn't use a gun or force to accumulate his ill-gotten fortune. Instead, he relied on his wit. Armed with an I.Q. of 136 and only a tenth grade education, he successfully impersonated, for extended periods of time, a pediatrician, a practicing attorney (fabricating a Harvard law degree, but genuinely passing the Louisiana Bar Exam), a Sociology professor at Brigham Young University, a stock broker, and even an FBI agent. His notorious escapades as a pilot for a major international airline earned him the dubious title "The Skywayman" among authorities who pursued him.

For some time the old adage, "crime doesn't pay," seemed a ridiculous notion to young Frank Abagnale as he cashed $2.5 million worth of fraudulent checks in all 50 states and 26 foreign countries. All things must come to an end though, and when he was 21 Abagnale was apprehended by French authorities. He served prison sentences in French, Swedish and American prisons. After five years, he was released upon the condition that he would help the government with fraud prevention. . . . without remuneration. He met this condition dutifully, and on his own initiative, repaid all fraudulently obtained funds with interest.

His amazing story is depicted in the best-selling book Catch Me If You Can, which is soon to be made into a motion picture by Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks production company.
